French authorities will start intercepting small boats in Channel after British demands
French officials have consented to start intercepting small boats in the Channel, after months of pressure from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift follows the British leader wrote to the President urging him to back the plan and saying there presently "have no effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police will be allowed to intercept the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their migrants, according to official statements.
French authorities have rarely intervened to stop the heavily loaded boats departing from the shoreline because it is considered excessively high a risk to both personnel and individuals.
"It is essential that we deploy these methods this month... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel."
Currently, a French maritime police spokesperson says officers will begin taking action at sea, with the objective of protecting human life.
Notably, the spokesperson ruled out the use of nets to intercept boats, which had previously been reported as a potential technique to disable the engines of the vessels.
The decision to take action at all is a major step forward, following a brief change towards a stricter strategy this warmer season, which dropped off when the former Interior Minister left government.
This was demonstrated in the summer month, preceding a summit between the Prime Minister and French president, when French police were witnessed walking into the sea to damage the sides of a vessel.
Currently French officials will once more be permitted to stop boats before they collect migrant individuals from the beaches of northern France, although it's not clear how the small boats will be prevented.
Strong winds are currently postponing the commencement of interceptions and the people-smuggling gangs will be seeking ways to adapt to evade detection, as they have frequently done in the past.
UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for response.
